My personal favorite is from Berkeley. They claim to be reading your mind (and broadcasting it on a TV!!!):
Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people’s dynamic visual experiences – in this case, watching Hollywood movie trailers.
As yet, the technology can only reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed. However, the breakthrough paves the way for reproducing the movies inside our heads that no one else sees, such as dreams and memories, according to researchers.
If you think this is all 'academic bullshit' and people will never adopt this, then think again:
Barcelona clubbers get chipped
It was pretty popular in the Netherlands as well a couple of years back. People were queuing up to get 'chipped' in exchange for a discount per drink and free entrance. Yes, we Dutch can be a bit cheap ;)
I've also seen a documentary on TV which was about one of the surgical treatments involving the implantation of a medical device in to the brain (Deep brain stimulation)to treat Parkinson's disease.
