Man-machine integration comes sooner than you think

For all of you shocked at the idea of man-machine integration: It might come sooner than you think. Here is a list of 10 important breakthroughs of last year

My personal favorite is from Berkeley. They claim to be reading your mind (and broadcasting it on a TV!!!):
Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people’s dynamic visual experiences – in this case, watching Hollywood movie trailers.

As yet, the technology can only reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed. However, the breakthrough paves the way for reproducing the movies inside our heads that no one else sees, such as dreams and memories, according to researchers.

If you think this is all 'academic bullshit' and people will never adopt this, then think again:
Barcelona clubbers get chipped

It was pretty popular in the Netherlands as well a couple of years back. People were queuing up to get 'chipped' in exchange for a discount per drink and free entrance. Yes, we Dutch can be a bit cheap ;)

Social Flow: an interesting way to use algorithms to optimize social media strategies

Following the discussion about social media effectiveness and tracking, this is an interesting example of a start-up using complex algorithms to implement a better social media strategy for companies.

Social Flow raised $7 million last summer and is quickly growing in terms of employees and clients.
What they do is basically capturing the best moments for a company to send tweets or facebook messages to their target audience, and actually send them.
There are other companies - like HootSuite or TweetDeck - that provide this type of "message scheduling" services, but the difference here is that while these companies mainly use as key metrics the "online presence" of the target audience, Social Flow tries to understand when users are not only present but are effectively "receptive" to a particular message (also given the content of the message). One of the tool they developed for that is called Attention Score and has exactly this specific goal.

The service is now priced at $ 99/ month for each account. Apparently "big names" like The Economist and Pepsi are already using it with good results in terms of, for example, clicks per tweet.

TechCrunch recently published an interesting article on that: http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/07/socialflow-opens-the-floodgates/

"Make It Like Gmail For Social Conversations"

And that's exactly what he did - witness the power of what an online network can do for you. Engagio went from an idea being posted about and discussed on a VC blog http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2011/12/engagio.html to raising $540k in funding last week. Engagio solves the issue of how you keep track of all your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn conversations by creating a "social inbox". The site is modelled after Gmail, but its creator, Fred Wilson, sees it as more than just an inbox - it's a dashboard that helps you track your online conversations and lets you develop meaningful relationships from them.

WikiLeaks, a postscript
A really interesting article on WikiLeaks on the New York times. The author believes that Wikileaks hasn't really transformed our world, and that the only thing that has changed is that the government is now more secretive than ever - somewhat in line with our class discussion last week!
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/20/opinion/keller-wikileaks-a-postscript.html?scp=2&sq=wikileaks&st=cse

Which influencer are you? And btw, what's your Klout?

From this article on the types of social media influencers: http://socialmediatoday.com/iansmith/448280/five-types-social-media-influencers
  • The networker (Social Butterfly): one who has the biggest contact list and found on all platforms. He or she who knows everybody and everybody knows him or her.
  • The opinion leader (Thought Leader): one who can become the best ambassador of a brand. He or she has built a strong authority in his or her field by based on credibility. Their messages are most often commented on and retweeted.
  • The discoverer (Trendsetter): one who is always the first to use a new platform.  Constantly on the lookout for new trends, they become the “hub” in the sector.
  • The sharer (Reporter): one who distributes information to the bloggers to journalists through the specialized webzines. He or she usually amplify messages.
  • The user (Everyday Customer): one that represents the regular customer. He or she does not have a network as large as the networker, but his or her network remains equally important.

Social shopping: little black bag

Little Black Bag is not the first company to try and bring together online shopping with social media. However whether it has discovered a winning formula is yet to be seen; I for one remain sceptical at best.

The concept is based on the Japanese 'lucky brand sale' where you get a lucky dip of luxury brand products at heavily reduced prices. You then have a period of time where you can swap items in your bag with others online, until you are satisfied with you products and the bag gets shipped to your door.

For me the combination of online shopping with instant connection to your social network offers huge potential. Websites which allow your friends to rate clothes you are thinking of buying are using these tools to offer something useful to their customers. Little Black Bag tries to make a game out of shopping, which in my opinion is asking far too much. Furthermore, you are intended to swap items with people you don't even know!

Perhaps I am pessimistic, too time constrained, too functional online, or just simply not the target market. However the list of brands mentioned on the site would suggest otherwise. And if this is so, I don't see them sticking around for long.

Google Catches Up with FourSquare

As more and more social media platforms upgrade themselves to offer as integrated a platform as possible to consumers, Google has just launched Google Buzz in its quest for info-ubiquity.

Link:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2010/02/google_buzz_location-aware_social_network.html

Google seeks to challenge websites like FourSquare, by taking the location check-in one step further.
It ties into the location-aware capabilities Google has built into such sites as Google Maps to determine your location, then goes a step further to try to map those coordinates to real-world places and establishments.

As more platforms get polarized, and compete in their own right, will consumers start to polarize on such factors such as geography, demographics, or interests?

WSJ Report: Google Secretly Tracked Apple's Users

The Wall Street Journal published on Friday a report stating that Google secretly tracked the online moves of Apple's Safari users by exploiting a loophole in the browser's privacy settings.

The report also says that Google stopped the practice after being contacted by WSJ.

Google replies saying that: "The Journal mischaracterizes what happened and why. We used known Safari functionality to provide features that signed-in Google users had enabled. It's important to stress that these advertising cookies do not collect personal information."

Rising Danger...

Hi,
Although privacy still exists, I think we all accepted the fact that we are more open with our lives. How we define 'private' today is not the same with how we used to do it 10 even 5 years ago. However, the danger is rising. There are at least one article in news everyday about how the mobile apps/smart phones threaten our privacy - check out the links below for some of the most recent ones.

Large Dutch companies start friday afternoon drinks on Facebook

Three weeks ago, Heineken started off on facebook with their post "Bakkie doen?", a way of inviting people to firday afternoon drinks. Quickly Douwe Egberts, a major Dutch coffee producer responded on Facebook "let's do it". Quickly other companies like Lays answered that they would bring the chips and T-mobile said they would call other people. Fiat responded by saying they would bring everyone safely home and Nikon said they would make the pictures. Below the full screenshots taken from Facebook.

Impact of Social Media on French & Chinese Traditional Media industry

The first edition of the Sino-French Media Forum occured this week in Beijing:

The main topic of the Forum was "How traditional media can evolve at the digital era?".
Social media with its speed and its wide reach was clearly on everybody's mind. Social medias are a clear disruptor in the traditional media industry and has fundamentaly challenged the way media and journalists perform their job.
Happy to discuss more in class the challenges French & Chinese face in this new and changing digital environment.

WikiLeaks "banned" from UNESCO Conference on WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks has decided to formally denounce UNESCO for banning WikiLeaks from the Conference "The Media World after WikiLeaks and News of the World" which is taking place these days (February 16-17) in Paris.

This is WikiLeaks official press release http://wikileaks.org/WikiLeaks-denounces-UNESCO-after.html

WIKILEAKS PRESS RELEASE. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wed Feb 15 17:00:00 2012 GMT
"#OccupyUNESCO"
WikiLeaks denounces UNESCO for banning WikiLeaks from conference about WikiLeaks (February 16-17, UNESCO Headquarters, Paris).
WikiLeaks denounced UNESCO for banning WikiLeaks from tomorrow’s international conference about WikiLeaks. The large two-day conference, which has 37 speakers listed, is to be held UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. US organizers have stacked the conference with WikiLeaks opponents and blocked all speakers from WikiLeaks, stating that the decision to censor WikiLeaks representation was an exercise in ’freedom of expression... our right to give voice to speakers of our choice’.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange denounced the conference: ’UNESCO has made itself an international human rights joke. To use "freedom of expression" to censor WikiLeaks from a conference about WikiLeaks is an Orwellian absurdity beyond words. This is an intolerable abuse of UNESCO’s Constitution. It’s time to occupy UNESCO.’
WikiLeaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson expressed consternation in a letter to UNESCO about the exclusion: ’UNESCO has a duty to assure that fairness and balance is secured in important discussions carried out under the banner of the organization. It is obvious that this will hardly be the case, given the selection of speakers. This is both a disgrace to UNESCO and potentially harmful to WikiLeaks.’
Julian Assange calls for an immediate investigation "UNESCO must conduct a full, frank and open investigation as to how its constitution, which tasks it to promote freedom of expression, freedom of information and freedom of communication, has become a blunt instrument of censorship. UNESCO must demonstrate that cold-war style power-plays, by the United States, or indeed any other country, are no longer acceptable."
The following hash tag may be used to follow the story: "#OccupyUNESCO"
Full details and a longer explanatory article follow.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19: http://www.udhr.org/UDHR/ART19.HTM
WikiLeaks refused participation at UNESCO WikiLeaks conference
When WikiLeaks became aware that a two day conference about WikiLeaks’ impact was being hosted by UNESCO, WikiLeaks expressed its consternation that no-one from WikiLeaks had been approached to participate - and requested that WikiLeaks be given access to meaningful participation at the conference.
UNESCO forwarded WikiLeaks’ letter to Ronald Koven of the "World Press Freedom Committee". The WPFC is based in Reston, Virginia, in the United States. UNESCO lists the organizers as the U.S. "World Press Freedom Committee" (WPFC) in cooperation with the UNESCO Communication & Information Sector. The WPFC board (http://is.gd/1bF0N3 ), is comprised of Washington insiders, cold war ideological allies (such as Freedom House and the disgraced IAPA) and U.S. mainstream media groups.
Although WikiLeaks has over 90 partner organisations and despite numerous other books having been published on WikiLeaks, UNESCO and the WPFC decided to exclude WikiLeaks and stack the UNESCO conference with a "who’s who" of WikiLeaks opponents and critics, no matter how insignificant or poorly informed. This includes speakers who are not merely critics, but four who have active legal conflicts with the organization. Tellingly, the key note is by a journalist who serialized her failed anti-WikiLeaks book in a U.K tabloid as "The WikiFreak: In a new book one author reveals how she got to know Julian Assange and found him a predatory, narcissistic fantasist".
Ronald Koven is the WPFC’s spokesman on ’press freedom concerns’ at UNESCO. Koven has been monitoring UNESCO for the U.S. organizations for over 30 years. In recent years he has been a U.S. Embassy informant and is mentioned in WikiLeaks’ cables. Koven refused WikiLeaks participation due to what can only be interpreted as political considerations:
"I can only share in your attachment to freedom of expression. It must include our right to give voice to speakers of our choice."
Koven went on to justify the exclusion:
"The main focus of this conference is not about WikiLeaks as such but about the implications of its actions for the future of professional journalism."
This characterisation is at odds with the description of the aims of the conference on its website: "The conference aims to explore a wide range of new questions for traditional media and journalism posed by the WikiLeaks phenomenon" (that is, WikiLeaks).
WikiLeaks again contacted UNESCO’s Sylvie Coudray, who is in charge for Freedom of Expression, reminding UNESCO that it has a duty to ensure fairness and balance in conferences carried out under the banner of the organization, and in accordance with Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. UNESCO’s legacy is at stake, and the political decisions driving this exclusion are yet another episode in the persecution of WikiLeaks.
UNESCO responded "We do not have intention to cause any polemic" and stated that WikiLeaks could attend the conference- as long as WikiLeaks did not demand to participate as speakers. She appears to deny WikiLeaks work as journalism:
"Mr Koven has already answered to some of your questions. May I underline that the conference is *about journalism* in light of the situations that occurred with Wikileaks and News of the World, and *not about the episodes themselves*."
The full correspondence between WikiLeaks, UNESCO and WPFC is available at the end of this document.
Although the conference is meant to be about WikiLeaks and freedom of the press, there is nothing about the most serious attack on WikiLeaks and freedom of expression everywhere. The extrajudicial attack has wiped out 95% of WikiLeaks revenues and has been the subject of wide-spread condemnation, including from the UN and the EU. Since Dec 2010, US financial giants VISA, MasterCard, The Bank of America, PayPal and Western Union have been involved in an economic censorship war against this organization. A formal U.S. Treasury investigation found there were no grounds for the US to blacklist WikiLeaks. Despite this, the unlawful blockade continues.
MasterCard, along with the U.S. State Department, sponsored the WPFC organized the 2011, so-called, "UNESCO World Press Freedom Day", during the start of the U.S. economic censorship campaign against WikiLeaks. It also conspicuously avoided discussion of extrajudicial banking blockade against WikiLeaks

A spokesperson of the US World Press Freedom Committee - one of the conference organisers together with UNESCO - said that "The main focus of this conference is not about WikiLeaks as such but about the implications of its actions for the future of professional journalism."

UNESCO stated that  it “did not have intention to cause any polemic" and that WikiLeaks could attend the conference as long as it did not demand to participate as speakers.

In the spirit of "social media", also details about email conversations between WikiLeaks and UNESCO have been published in the WikiLeaks press release (to be found at http://wikileaks.org/WikiLeaks-denounces-UNESCO-after.html )

Social apps 'harvest smartphone contacts'

It seems that social networks' approach to privacy and user data will be a critical issue in the coming months and years. While data mining offers countless monetizing opportunities, major social networks such as Facebook, Google + and Twitter always seem to be tittering on the edge of a major PR issue that could dramatically alter their image and usage.

The latest scandal in this ever-unfolding story is that Twitter has admitted copying entire address books from smartphones and storing the data on its servers, often without customers' knowledge.

Social Media Propels Jeremy Lin

Anyone who's a basketball sports fan (especially if you're an ethnic Chinese) would have been all excited about the rise of a new basketball super star - Jeremy Lin.

I am obviously not a basketball fan, but his name has managed to pop up multiple times on my Facebook news feed.
I have even clicked on a youtube video to figure out why there is such a huge fuss about him.

Forbes just wrote an article about "Jeremy Lin and the Power of Social Media"

Tickets are selling out, Madison Square Garden (which owns the Knicks) has seen its stock price increase, and Lin has brought on a new wave of fanfare all around the world, especially in China.
If this happened a few years ago, one cannot imagine there could have been such a pick up made possible at such a fast pace.

Reality Check

In the INSEAD world of incredibly talented, intellectual, awesome people who know everything about everything, I thought I might offer a comforting reality check, so here it is:

Most people don't know how to use social media.

It's true especially in the business world. Most businesspeople are older than us - a fact easy to forget on campus, but easy to remember once you see an office again. Some are still learning how to use justify margins in word, or worse, use a mouse properly. The message they're hearing regarding social media is simply, "You have to be on Facebook and Twitter. If you're not on there, sign up now." The majority of these people respond by signing up for Facebook, posting a couple of comments, adding a profile picture, and waiting for something magic to happen. Then they become confused, get frustrated, and give up when their sales don't automatically increase exponentially.

Much of the older generation thinks of social media as a print ad on the computer. They paste something on a website and wait for people to see it and start buying. These people don't understand the fundamental change that is happening in the way our world interacts, consumes, and seeks information. They are stuck in the old mindset of one-way information dumping, which we all know is not an effective use of social media.

I witnessed this lack of understanding countless times in my time selling Manhattan real estate. Because I possessed what in an INSEAD context would be a fundamental understanding of social media marketing, I was called upon to lead seminars for the 400+ other salespeople in my company. Time and time again I would hear some version of this:

Jake, I AM using social media. Every day I put my listings on my Facebook page with really nice pictures and a beautiful description. I've even connected it to Twitter so it automatically gets tweeted! EVERY DAY I'm doing this. Why aren't I getting more clients?

Same symptom over and over again. They see Facebook as the classifieds section of a newspaper rather than a social space for sharing and interacting. In response to such a comment, I usually give some version of the following:

Martha, imagine seeing a client on the street and saying to her "Hey, I have a great townhouse for sale on Thompson Street. There's an open house this Sunday! Here are some photos!" Now imagine doing this every day. Your client is going to get very annoyed with you and start walking a different route just to avoid you.

This usually breaks one barrier to understanding, and they start to realize that social media is all about interaction and relationships, EVEN IN BUSINESS!

Yet, the truth remains: when we re-enter the business world, our superiors will be turning to us for advice on what to do with this entirely new form of communication. While this should give us a boost of confidence, we should remember that we grew up in the internet age - they didn't. We are therefore, I would argue, generally more equipped to navigate and utilize social media. We will therefore need to constructively bridge the gap between our e-genes and their business experience to execute effective strategies through this new social medium.

Pinterest

Pinterest is rapidly emerging as the hottest new social network on the internet. I found this interesting article with statistics on demographics of its users, and how these differ between the US and the UK. Interestingly, there is a major difference between the two groups' demographics, and also in their use of the social network.

Is Unsubscribing really enough?

After today's class on being able to opt-out of privacy settings, I wondered how your information is used after you unsubscribe from newsletters. I was reminded of an e-mail I received from Gilt Groupe (a fashion/groupon type of website) last week. I had unsubscribed from their list over a year ago.

"Dear Member,

We are writing to let you know that we've updated our Privacy Policy. Although we realize you no longer receive Gilt promotional emails, we are legally required to let you know about this update...."

I wonder how long these companies keep your information after you unsubscribe, and if unsubscribing is really enough to keep your information private.

The Impact of EU Internet Privacy Regulations on Early-Stage Investment

Here is a link to a briefing published by Booz&Company earlier this month about the impact of European Internet privacy regulations on angel and venture capital investment in new advertising and technology companies. This comes as an appendix to the class discussion we were having about the European vs. US school of thoughts regarding Internet privacy regulations. Key highlights of the briefing:

  • Law and policy makers in the EU might want to take into account the angel and venture capitalist community views when considering Internet privacy regulations. In fact, 63 percent of angel investors would be deterred from investing in advertising technology companies by any sort of regulation requiring websites to allow users to opt in to data collection. Moreover, requiring users to opt in would have an even more negative impact on investment
  • Authors even argue that a change in Internet privacy regulations would likely have a more negative impact on investment than a weak economic landscape

The Shit Girls Say meme: friendly prejudice, but prejudice all the same

Now every city, every group, ever subculture is probably making there own one...
My question: This phenomena is mainly American thing?

Who does Google think you are? (and the possibility to "opt out")

As a quick follow up to todays class on privacy:

In case you are curious who google thinks you are, check out Google's ad Preferences Manager:
http://www.google.com/settings/ads/preferences/?hl=en#general

If you've opted in for their web advertising (default in many countries) you can see what Google has so far inferred about you. The results are spectacularly off for many people (so don't be scared if Google thinks you are a 65+ year old man).

The website also gives you the possibility to opt out of their personalised advertising. Might come in handy if you got scared during class today ;)

Google's New Privacy Policy

Google's privacy policy is set to take effect on the first of March. Many people are raising their eyebrows, from US consumer watchdogs all the way to the EU regulators.

The gist? Under the banner of simplification, Google is going to consolidate more than 60 product specific policies into one - and merging your digital trail from all these products to analyze and generate assumptions about you.

Imagine - google search, docs, calendar, you tube, and your location through goggle maps - just to name a few.

Still not convinced about the possibilities/repercussions?

Excerpt from article:
You’re on the way to a meeting. Traffic seems to be slowing. A text comes in: “You’re going to be late. Take the next exit for alternate route.” It’s from Google.

This is not Google’s version of Siri. It’s a result of the company’s push to use data it collects from you in novel ways that could be helpful, or unsettling.

Influencers shaping WoM of your brand

Related to the topic of social media campaigns, we discussed in class whether it is better to target hubs, bridges or fringes in the network as seeds. Leveraging on seeds, who can influence large audiences - was built into a business model by an INSEAD Alumnus, Christoph Zrenner. He visited us recently in the New Business Ventures class. His company, Wildfire Pte. Ltd works for big brands such as Coca-Cola. Using data-mining on online blogs and forums, it quickly discovers if there is public concern or negative comments on e.g. Coca-Cola products. Then it engages its community of influencers to share their opinion and turn the conversations around, improving WoM of the brand. Wildfire does not pay its influencers but rewards them with online virtual awards and recognition, based on their effectiveness of turning around conversations.
Clearly, there is a trend to see more and more active influencers online.

Watch out what you tweet!

Big brother is after you: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/11/us-usa-homelandsecurity-websites-idUSTRE80A1RC20120111

And it could easily affect you:
- Two Brits were refused entry into the US for tweeting "Destroying America" (British slang for partying)
- South-Korean activist jailed for retweeting about the Kim Jong Il

I wonder what Singapore does in this respect?

p.s. Tweeting, blogging or posting online about your vacation recently became the #1 way for thieves to find out which houses were easy prey in the Netherlands. So even if you are not going to the US, think twice before you post!

Intelligent Computing...Could this be the future

Going back to class #1 and the concept of moving towards Intelligent Computing this Ted Talk provides an interesting look at what the future could hold.

It's created by the Media Lab at MIT looking at a new device that combines off the shelf components and existing google/social media technology to provide users with a "sixth sense." The kicker: in mass production this device would not cost more than today's cell phone!

Very Minority Report esque but the possibilities are pretty interesting.

The Social SuperBowl

(from: http://blog.exacttarget.com/blog/socially-creative-and-delivered/who-won-the-social-media-superbowl-infographic)

Findings
  • Consumers are transforming ads into online commentary and content - the number of tweets and likes generated during the game soared.
  • The game continued to activate fan bases up to the last minute. You'd have thought Giants fans would have liked them sometime during the regular season, but the week up to the game through the fourth quarter saw an additional 10% growth in the Giants fan base
  • Advertisers who pre-released commercials on YouTube were able to build audience pregame, riding the wave of pregame anticipation to generate millions of consumer initiated views.
Infographic-
We spent the week leading up to the game through 11 p.m. on game day tracking social media mentions and likes for participating teams and advertiser brands. Here, in a visual nutshell, are some highlights about social media use during Super Bowl 46.

Rumor of "Kim Jong Un" assassination spred across Weibo and Twitter

This is getting interesting... "Rumor" from China's social network website "Sina Weibo" said that North Korea’s newly installed leader, Kim Jong Un, was assassinated during a trip to Beijing... and Twitter quickly picked up the story and made it a truly popular topic for the weekend :)

Soon: Not only "Like", but also "Listen", "Read" and more.

As we saw in class on Wednesday, its not particularly easy to create successful and authentic social media viral campaigns and/or videos. However, we can be inspired by some successes. Here is a sample of some of 2011's best social media campaigns, and what lessons can be drawn from each:

TV to become the next battle field

TV will most likely become the next battle field after mobile phones for SNS providers, online service providers and search engines. Google is making an aggressive move to install as many Android OS as possible to TV sets, on the other hand there are rumors that Apple will come up with a TV with its own operating system installed (not the current Apple TV which is already in the market).

“Apple TV to come in 3 sizes, top out at 55 inches, report says”

“Sony Google TV update coming soon”

 “Samsung To Sell Google TV”

The New York Times comes back on the story of what is probably one of the most viral video ever with 416 mln hits and counting.

Social Media as a Donut

Social Commerce

Because Facebook is a nice place to find our friends & enemies, we all spend a large proportion of our time hooked to it. With that, Facebook is also becoming the world's favourite shopping mall.

This article discusses the business side of Facebook: The 7 Dimensions of Facebook

A short summary:

JK Wedding video: who says wedding says...

...divorce ? 10mln hits

SPOOF, performed by a production company of professional dancers and actors, of the legendary 2009 YouTube video "JK Wedding Entrance Dance," which was of a St. Paul, Minnesota (U.S.A.) couple that decided to spice up their own wedding ceremony. The original "JK" video was such an international sensation that hit TV shows "The Office" and "Glee" literally COPIED the Minnesota couple's "JK" video straight off YouTube. (Youtube comment)

Ford Fiesta Movement: Can Social Media Sell Cars?

Following our discussion in class about Ford's initiative to raise awareness for the Fiesta launch in the US, here is an article that discussed it in Oct 2009. (Before the actual introduction of the car).

http://mashable.com/2009/10/02/fiesta-movement-numbers/

In short, it shows that the impact on Ford's image was mainly positive at least in terms of PR, for having preempted that approach in the car industry. The comments below the article tend to confirm it even though there is a biais to tech-savvy readers on Mashable. Some people also hold their judgment and wait for the actual number of sales it would generate.

Ironically, they embedded the very same video of that girl ziplining in the amusement park, which we enjoyed so much in class ;). One of the comments echoes exactly what one of us said about the message it sends: " I saw the fiesta for 10 seconds in that video, followed by many minutes of annoying woman. I don’t get it…'.

Facebook and Governance

Having a discussion on social media increasing participation and transparency leading ultimately to better governance, I found this Bloomberg article rather interesting:

Facebook Governance Like Dictatorship: Haverty

Here are two interesting quotes:
"Facebook Inc.’s governance structure resembles a dictatorship, requiring investors to surrender rights to founder Mark Zuckerberg"
"Facebook still is a company that a growth-stock investor “absolutely” wants to own"

Twitter sued by Brazilian authorities

The Brazilian Government has sued Twitter for maintaining several accounts that warn Brazilian drivers of road traps. Brazilian authorities argue that certain Twitter accounts undermine the government's fight against drunk driving. The company may be required to pay close to $300,000 per day until it complies with Brazil's demands.

India to require Google and Facebook to provide real time screening/censoring of content?

On the back of news that twitter will consider censoring content in certain geographies, the Indian government has sent out strong signals that it will require social networks to provide real time screening in order to prevent 'objectionable' content

Interesting take on twitter's low engagement in India

I'm just not sure if Sarah Lacy has got it right though... Twitter is not as accessible over mobile in India as its made out to be...

Social Media and the Superbowl

For my American friends and classmates. The Giants and the Patriots talk about their Social media marketing efforts. Interesting to see how much social media has changed since the last time they both were in the Super Bowl.

AOL's fortunes & Julian Assagne

Since Facebook just went public with a $5bn public offering, I thought it might be interesting to highlight the fortunes of a former tech superstar - AOL.  The following article shows you just how far even someone like AOL can come: where "less loss is good".
