How Web 2.0 are the fans of your favorite team?

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers amazing playoff victory this past Saturday, a brief post on sports...leagues and teams are businesses after all.

Found this site, Fan Graph, measuring the social media followings globally for different teams and leagues, both professional and collegiate. Currently it just tracks Facebook and Twitter.

Some take aways after surfing:
  • FC Barcelona has the largest amount of socially engaged fans
  • Manchester United doesn't even have an official Twitter page?! Interesting seeing who does not have Fb or Twitter pages
  • Ratio of Twitter/FB fluctuates a lot by city and sport (didn't crunch numbers, please feel free to be the first of my friends to do so)
  • Each day, the average team grows ~160 Twitter followers or ~440 FB fans

    2. Cristiano Ronaldo
    3. Ronaldo
